Microprocessor Controls

Microprocessor (PLC – Programmable Logic Controller) machines have been available on the market for many years, however not with the abilities of today’s machine. Microprocessors are designed to speed your production while making your final product consistent between your operators. PLC machines allow the foreman to program and store up to 6 different time cycles for head steam, buck steam, vacuum and release using a key. Once the key is removed, the machine operator cannot adjust the timers. The steam and vacuum functions can be turned on and off as many times or for as long as you need. Once these timers are programmed, they are only able to select from the 6 programs. Besides operating the machine, the PLC also stores operator information:

  • How many cycles the operator has started
  • Which programs the operator has used and how many of each
  • How many times the operator has stopped the cycle before it has been completed. This feature is an excellent way to monitor quality of work by an operator. If the finished product does not meet expectations, you can check if the operator is stopping the cycle prematurely.
  • Daily production – How efficient is the operator working
  • This information is stored into the computer and cannot be erased without a key. It is visible through the OIT (Operator Interface Terminal), which is also used to program the timers. For more advanced systems, machines can be connected to a main terminal in the office and all of the information can be available at the touch of a button.

Another benefit to PLC controlled machines is Diagnostics. If there is ever a problem with the machine that cannot be corrected over the phone immediately, with the use of a computer a modem, and a phone line, diagnostic work can be done almost anywhere. This is to decrease down time. Most problems can be resolved in minutes to get the machine back online and working.

The possibilities with microprocessor-controlled machines are endless. It is time to put away the old mechanical timers and step up with technology.

Microprocessors can be installed on any rebuilt Hoffman or New Yorker air operated presses in the place of mechanical timers when ordered, and can also be made as a retrofit to your existing machine with mechanical timers. These Microprocessor units are a perfect match for your air operated legger and topper presses. Training services are also available to help in maximizing the full potential of the machine.
